Each vessel owes a docking and special survey every five years, and the loan requires a reserve to be built towards it out of earnings. The reserve is tracked in the same spreadsheet as the distributions, so a strong quarter is distributed on a balance that assumed a yard cost estimated three years ago and never revised against the vessel’s actual survey range. If you finance or lease vessels, that is a desk in your own business.
What the work is
An agent holds the reserve position per vessel against its next survey date and the current yard estimate, applies the accrual the facility requires out of each period’s earnings, and shows the shortfall before any distribution is calculated. The estimate carries the date it was last revised. What it does not do
Whether to accrue against a stale yard estimate or revise it and reduce this quarter’s distribution, because the owner is choosing between cash today and a funded docking later. That is not a limitation of the software. It is the line the reference design draws on purpose, and a vendor who offers to move it is selling you something else.
What changes
